TiviMate buffer size: which setting should you use?

0 replies1 viewsStarted 5 hr ago

There isn't one best TiviMate buffer size. The right setting depends on how steady your connection is, and it is a trade-off between smooth playback and speed. A bigger buffer protects against stutter but makes channels start more slowly and leaves you further behind live. A smaller one is quicker but less forgiving.

Quick answer: On a wired, stable connection use a smaller buffer. On Wi-Fi, or if you see regular stutter, step up one level at a time. Don't jump straight to the largest, as that rarely helps and slows channel changes.

What does the buffer do?

Your player downloads a few seconds of video ahead of what you are watching. That reserve smooths over short dips in your connection. The buffer setting decides how much to hold in reserve before and during playback. TiviMate's playback settings include a buffer size option; the choices and labels differ between versions, so look for the nearest match.

What is the trade-off?

Bigger buffer Smaller buffer
Fewer stutters on shaky connections Faster channel changes
Slower to start each channel More likely to stall if the connection dips
You are further behind live (matters for sport and news) Closer to live
Uses a little more memory Lighter on a low-memory stick

A decision rule by connection type

  • Wired Ethernet, steady line: use a small or default buffer. Increase only if you still see stutter.
  • Good Wi-Fi close to the router: the default is usually fine. Move one step up if you get occasional freezes.
  • Weak Wi-Fi, long distance, or busy house: fix the connection first (see below), then step the buffer up one level if needed.
  • Live events where delay matters: keep it as small as you can live with.

Change one level, test for an evening, and only then change again.

Why a bigger buffer won't always fix it

A buffer covers short dips. If your line is too slow, or the problem is at the source, a larger buffer only delays the problem. Check your connection first: how to stop IPTV buffering and internet speed for IPTV. If buffering hits only one channel, the fault is likely at the source and no setting will cure it.

Memory can limit a big buffer too. On low-end sticks, a large buffer plus a large guide can slow the app. See the TiviMate setup guide for the wider settings.

If that didn't work

Note your device, whether you use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, your line speed from a speed test, the buffer level you tried and whether the stutter affects all channels or one. Leave out any playlist addresses or logins when you post.
