If your provider gives you a choice, use the Xtream-style login (server address, username and password) when your player supports it, and use the M3U URL when it does not or when you want a fixed file. The login usually gives the player more to work with, while the M3U link is simpler and works in almost every app.
Quick answer: Pick the Xtream-style login if your player offers it, because it can fetch the guide, catch-up information and on-demand lists from one source and refresh them reliably. Pick the M3U URL if your player has no login option, if you want to edit the list, or if it is the only format you were given.
What is the difference between the two?
An M3U URL is a web address that returns a text file listing channels and their stream addresses. The player downloads the file and reads it. Our M3U playlists explained guide shows what is inside one.
An Xtream-style login is three values: a server address, a username and a password. The player uses them to ask the server for channel lists, categories and other data directly, instead of reading a single file. The name comes from a panel software that many services use, and players call it things like "Xtream Codes API" or "Xtream login".
Both are only ways of delivering a list. Neither includes any channels by itself, and you should only use a source you are entitled to use.
What does each format give your player?
| Feature | M3U URL | Xtream-style login |
|---|---|---|
| Channel list | Yes | Yes |
| Guide (EPG) | Only if the file points to one and the IDs match | Often fetched automatically, if the source provides it |
| Catch-up | Only if the file carries the right attributes and your app understands them | Often supported where the source offers an archive |
| On-demand lists | Usually mixed into one large file | Often kept in separate lists |
| Refresh | Whole file re-downloaded | Player requests only what it needs |
| Editing by hand | Easy in a text editor | Not possible, it is a live query |
| App support | Almost universal | Common, but not every app |
Treat the middle rows as "often", not "always". What you actually get depends on the player and on what the source provides.
Which one should you pick?
Use this rule:
- Your player supports both and you were given both: use the Xtream-style login. It tends to load faster on big lists and sets up the guide with fewer steps.
- Your player only accepts M3U: use the M3U URL.
- You want to tidy the list or remove channels yourself: download an M3U and edit it, or use the player's own hide and reorder tools.
- You are testing a new app and want the quickest check: whichever you have to hand, then switch if the guide or catch-up does not behave.
Keep your details private
An M3U link and an Xtream login are both tied to your account. Do not post either one in a forum thread, screenshot or support message. If you need to show a setup, replace everything with placeholders such as https://example.com/your-playlist.m3u or your-username.
If that didn't work
If a source loads in one format but not the other, check the following before assuming something is broken:
- Typos in the address, including a trailing space copied from a message.
- Whether the server address needs a port number, if you were given one.
- Whether your player really supports the format you chose (some list it under a different name).
- Whether the guide address is separate from the playlist.
