VLC can play a network stream or an M3U playlist on almost any device, which makes it the quickest way to check whether a stream address works. This guide shows how to open a network stream in VLC on Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, how to view a playlist, how to record, and what to try when it fails.
VLC is a media player, not a TV service, so it contains no channels. You need a stream or playlist from a source you are entitled to use. IPTV Commons does not discuss or link to services, so all examples use example.com.
Quick answer: On Windows or Linux press Ctrl+N (Media > Open Network Stream), on a Mac use File > Open Network, and on Android, iOS or Apple TV use the Network or Stream option. Paste the address, for example
https://example.com/stream.m3u8, and press Play.
VLC is great for testing, but it has no proper TV guide or scheduled recording. For daily viewing, see IPTV player apps compared.
Which version of VLC should I use?
Use the current release from the official site, videolan.org, or your device's official store. At the time of writing, the stable desktop releases are in the 3.0 series. VLC 4.0 is only available as unstable nightly builds, so it is not recommended for everyday use. Mobile and Apple TV versions have their own numbering. Menu names can change slightly between versions.
Avoid download sites that bundle VLC with extras. The official site is the safe source.
How do I open a network stream in VLC on Windows?
- Open VLC.
- Choose Media > Open Network Stream (or press Ctrl+N).
- In the network URL box, paste the address. A typical shape is
https://example.com/stream.m3u8orhttps://example.com/playlist.m3u. - Click Play.
How do I open a network stream in VLC on a Mac?
- Open VLC.
- Choose File > Open Network (or press Cmd+N).
- Paste the address, for example
https://example.com/stream.m3u8. - Click Open.
How do I open a network stream in VLC on Android?
- Open the VLC app and go to the More or Stream area (the label differs by version).
- Choose the option to open a network stream.
- Paste the address and tap the play or confirm button.
How do I open a network stream in VLC on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV?
- Open VLC and go to the Network tab.
- Choose Open Network Stream. On some versions this is reached through a More menu.
- Paste the address, then start playback.
On Apple TV, entering long addresses with the remote is slow. VLC for iOS and Apple TV also offers ways to add content from other devices on your network. For other Apple TV options see Apple TV player setup.
Can VLC open an M3U playlist?
Yes. An M3U playlist is a list of stream addresses with names (see M3U playlists explained).
- Open the playlist the same way as a network stream, using an address such as
https://example.com/playlist.m3u. On desktop you can also use Media > Open File if the playlist is saved locally. - VLC loads the entries into its playlist.
- Open the playlist view to browse. On desktop, choose View > Playlist (or press Ctrl+L). Double-click a channel to play it.
On desktop, VLC can parse large playlists slowly. Searching the playlist window is quicker than scrolling.
VLC will show names and logos from the playlist, but it does not build a TV guide grid from XMLTV. For a guide you need a player such as those in our player comparison.
How do I record a stream in VLC?
On the desktop version, show the advanced controls through View > Advanced Controls. A record button appears, and pressing it starts and stops saving the stream to a file. The default folder differs by operating system, so check VLC's preferences if you cannot find the file. Recording features on mobile versions are limited and vary by version.
This only records what you are already watching, with no scheduling. For scheduled recording and the difference from catch-up and timeshift, read catch-up, timeshift and recording.
Why won't my stream play in VLC?
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| "Your input can't be opened" | Wrong or expired address, a typo, blocked by the network | Re-copy the address, check it begins with https:// or http://, and try another network |
| Black screen with audio | Video codec or hardware decoding problem | In VLC preferences, switch hardware decoding off and retry |
| Plays then freezes | Slow connection or Wi-Fi interference | Use Ethernet, see the buffering guide |
| Works on phone but not PC | Firewall or security software | Allow VLC through the firewall |
| Only some channels fail | The source for those entries is down | Test a single entry, then contact your provider |
If the address has a username and password in it, do not post it anywhere. Check the internet speed guide if the problem is only at busy times.
Is VLC safe to use for IPTV?
VLC is open source and from a non-profit. The risk comes from where you download it and what you open. Use the official site or store, keep VLC updated, and only open streams you trust. Updates are worth taking because the player handles many file types and fixes to it are released regularly.
Where can I get more help?
Ask in the Players forum. Include your VLC version and operating system, and remove any private addresses first.
What does the stream address actually look like?
A network stream address is just a web address that points to video. Two shapes are common. A direct address ends in something like .m3u8 or .ts, and plays one channel. A playlist address ends in .m3u or .m3u8 too, but holds many entries. VLC can usually work out which it has been given. If you are not sure, paste it in and see whether one video starts or a list appears.
Some addresses use http:// and others https://. Typing the wrong one will fail. Copy and paste the address in full rather than retyping it, because one missing character is the most common reason for an error.
Can I send a VLC stream to another device?
VLC can act as a streaming server on the desktop (under Media > Stream), but it is an advanced feature and is easy to misconfigure. For most households a simpler approach is to play the stream directly on the device in front of the TV. If you want a whole-home setup that records and serves multiple screens, a media server is a better tool: see Plex and Jellyfin live TV.
What are the limits of using VLC for live TV?
VLC is a general-purpose player, and live TV is not its focus. You will notice a few gaps compared with a dedicated app:
- No channel grid or "now and next" guide built from XMLTV
- No favourites by default, and no channel-number entry
- No scheduled recording
- Awkward remote-control navigation on a TV
None of this makes VLC bad. It is a very good diagnostic tool, because if a stream plays in VLC but not in your main app, the fault is likely in that app's settings, and if it fails in both, the address or source is the likely cause.
Frequently asked questions
Does VLC come with free TV channels?
No. VLC is a player only. For legal free viewing, see free legal live TV in the UK.
How do I paste a long URL on Apple TV?
Entering long addresses with the remote is slow. Using your iPhone as a keyboard, where the system offers it, makes it easier, or use VLC's options for sending content over your local network.
Can VLC show a TV guide?
Not as a grid from XMLTV. It shows the playlist names, so use a dedicated player if you need a guide.
Can I schedule recordings in VLC?
Not with a normal playlist. Desktop VLC can record the stream you are watching, but scheduling needs a DVR-style app or server.
Is VLC 4 ready to use?
At the time of writing VLC 4.0 is only distributed as unstable nightly builds, so most people should use the stable 3.0 series.
