An Apple TV can act as a tidy, reliable IPTV player. You install a player app from the App Store, point it at a playlist and programme guide that you are legitimately entitled to use, and switch on a couple of picture settings so video plays smoothly.
The one big rule is that tvOS installs apps from the App Store only. There is no sideloading route, so everything on this page starts with a store app.
Quick answer: Install a player such as iPlayTV or UHF from the Apple TV App Store, add your own M3U playlist and guide (EPG) address in the app, then turn on Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content > Match Frame Rate and Match Dynamic Range. Player apps do not supply channels. You bring the source.
Which IPTV player apps exist on Apple TV?
These apps are on the App Store for Apple TV as of October 2026. I checked their store listings, but features and prices change, so confirm on the listing before you buy.
| App | Developer (per listing) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| iPlayTV | Andre Silva | Apple TV only. Needs tvOS 18.6 or later. Listed at £5.99 on the UK store. Lists multiple playlists, a full guide, AirPlay 2 and a "Match TV frame rate" feature. |
| UHF | Short Wavelength Applications | Free to use, with optional paid features. Needs tvOS 17 or later. Handles M3U playlists and media servers such as Plex, Jellyfin and Emby, plus catch-up support. |
| VLC | VideoLAN | The free, official VLC app. Runs on Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. Good for playing a stream or files from a network share. |
Which should you pick? iPlayTV is a one-off purchase aimed at live channels, UHF is free to try and covers a wider range of sources, and VLC is the choice for testing a stream or playing your own files. Our IPTV player apps compared guide looks at the wider player landscape, including apps on other platforms.
I did not list other tvOS apps because I could not verify them against their store pages. Several "best IPTV app for Apple TV" articles are written by sites that sell services, so treat their rankings with caution.
How do I install a player on Apple TV?
- Open the App Store on your Apple TV.
- Use the search field and type the app's name.
- Select the app, check the developer matches the table above, and choose Get or the price button.
- Open it once installed.
If you have an iPhone or iPad, the app may also be on the App Store there. Some players, such as UHF, run across Apple devices, which can make entering long addresses easier.
How do I load my own M3U playlist and EPG?
An M3U playlist is a text file or web address that lists channels and the addresses of their streams. An EPG (electronic programme guide) is the schedule data, usually in XMLTV format. Our guides on M3U playlists explained and EPG and XMLTV cover them properly.
The general steps in most players are:
- Open the app and look for a settings, playlists or sources area.
- Choose to add a new playlist, then pick either a web address or a file.
- Enter the address of a source you have the right to use, such as your own server. In this guide's examples the address looks like
https://example.com/playlist.m3u, and you must replace it with your own. - Add the guide address in the app's EPG section, if it has one. iPlayTV's listing mentions EPG addresses, including compressed files.
- Wait for the channels to load, then check that channel names line up with guide data.
Typing long addresses with the Apple TV remote is slow, so check whether your app can import a playlist from a file or from another device.
Where the content comes from matters. This site does not discuss or promote IPTV services, and you should only load sources you have the right to use. Sources worth starting with include your own home recordings server, a broadcaster's free channels, or free legal live TV in the UK. If you are unsure, read is IPTV legal?.
How do I get smooth playback? Match frame rate and dynamic range
Apple TV can switch your TV's picture mode to suit what you are watching.
- Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content.
- Turn on Match Frame Rate. Apple says Apple TV matches content at 60, 50, 30, 25 and 24 frames per second.
- Turn on Match Dynamic Range if you watch HDR content.
Apple warns you may see a blank screen or flicker as your TV switches formats. If your TV supports Quick Media Switching (QMS), the delay is reduced. Apple's community pages also mention that some people find a dark picture in certain apps with Match Dynamic Range on. If that happens, try turning it off.
Match Frame Rate is a system setting, but the app has to take advantage of it, so check that your player app has its own frame rate option switched on. For background, see HDR, Dolby Vision and frame rate.
Which Apple TV do I need?
Apple's support pages say Match Frame Rate works on Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. Player apps set their own minimum tvOS versions: UHF's listing asks for tvOS 17 or later, and iPlayTV's asks for tvOS 18.6 or later. Check your tvOS version in the Apple TV's Settings, and update it if the app listing says your Apple TV is too old.
A wired connection helps with live streams. If your Apple TV has an Ethernet port, use it where you can. Not every model has the port, so check your own model.
Can I use AirPlay instead?
Yes. AirPlay sends video or your screen from an iPhone, iPad or Mac to the Apple TV, so it works even when an app has no tvOS version. It is handy for quick use, but it depends on your Wi-Fi. For a long evening of live TV, a native tvOS app, ideally with the Apple TV on Ethernet, is more dependable. iPlayTV's listing notes that you must select the Apple TV again in AirPlay after it wakes from sleep.
If streams buffer, see how to stop IPTV buffering. You can also share your setup in the Apple TV and iOS forum.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sideload apps on Apple TV?
Not in the way you can on some other devices. tvOS installs apps from the App Store, so choose a player from there.
Does the Apple TV come with IPTV channels?
No. Player apps are just software. You must provide your own legitimate playlist and guide data.
Which Apple TV models work with these apps?
It depends on the app. UHF needs tvOS 17 or later, and iPlayTV needs tvOS 18.6 or later, so check the app listing against your Apple TV's software version.
Should I turn on Match Content?
For films and sport it usually gives smoother motion because the TV switches to the video's frame rate. The brief blank screen when it switches is normal. Turn it off if you dislike it.
Is VLC good for IPTV on Apple TV?
It plays streams and files well, and it is free and official. One roundup I read said it lacks a programme guide, so for a guide-based live TV experience, a dedicated player may suit you better.
