LG TV developer mode: can you sideload apps on webOS?

0 replies1 viewsStarted 5 hr ago

LG's Developer Mode lets you install apps that are not in the LG Content Store, but only webOS apps (.ipk packages), never Android APKs. It is built for people testing their own apps, it needs a computer and an LG developer account, and it runs on a timed session that has to be renewed.

Quick answer: Yes, you can load a webOS .ipk through Developer Mode, but it is a developer workflow, not a one-click installer. The session expires unless you extend it, apps installed this way are removed when Developer Mode is switched off, and Android apps such as TiviMate will not run on webOS at all.

What is Developer Mode on an LG TV?

It is an app you install from the LG Content Store (search for "Developer Mode") and sign into with an LG developer account. When it is switched on, your computer can connect to the TV over your home network and push apps to it using LG's webOS command line tools. The app shows a session timer.

The exact version and screens differ between webOS releases, so treat this as an outline.

How does the session expiry work?

Developer Mode is enabled for a limited time, shown as a remaining-time counter in the app. While the TV is online you can extend the session from the Developer Mode app. If you let it lapse, Developer Mode is disabled and apps installed through it are removed. Plan to renew it, and do not rely on a sideloaded app being there permanently.

What can you install?

  • webOS apps packaged as .ipk: your own apps, or ones whose developer publishes a webOS package for this purpose.
  • Not Android APKs. webOS is not Android. Player apps built for Android TV or Fire TV do not run on LG sets. Our Samsung and LG apps guide lists what you can use instead.

If you just want a player on your LG TV, check the Content Store first. For many people a streaming stick or box is simpler than maintaining a developer session.

What are the risks?

  1. You skip the store's checks. An .ipk from an unknown source can contain anything. Only use packages from a developer you can identify, from their official page.
  2. Beware of "modded" or "premium unlocked" packages. They are a common route for malware and often stop working quickly.
  3. Protect your LG account. Never type your LG login into a website or tool that you found through a video or forum post.
  4. It can break at an update. Firmware updates may change how Developer Mode works.
  5. Time cost. Needing to renew the session and reinstall apps is a real ongoing chore.

Be sceptical of any site promising a "secret" trick to install apps on LG TVs without a computer. The official route is the one above.

Is there an easier alternative?

Usually, yes. A Fire TV Stick (on a model that supports it), a Google TV box or an Apple TV plugged into an HDMI port gives you a store full of players and avoids the timer. The TV remains your display.

If that didn't work

If you cannot get Developer Mode working, gather this before asking for help:

  • Your TV model and webOS version (usually under Settings, then General, then About This TV; menu wording varies).
  • Whether the Developer Mode app appears in the Content Store for your region.
  • The exact error shown by the app or by the command line tool.
  • Whether the TV and the computer are on the same network.

Tell us the TV model and what you were hoping to install, and we will say whether a webOS version exists.
