When BBC iPlayer stops working on a Firestick, the cause is usually a sign-in glitch, bad app data, an outdated app or a network setting that is blocking it. Work through the fixes below in order, quickest first. They assume you are watching from home in the UK, which iPlayer requires.
Quick answer: Sign out and back in, then clear the app's cache and data, update the app, and restart the stick. If it still fails, turn off any VPN or DNS filter and test your network.
1. Restart and sign in again
Unplug the stick for 30 seconds, plug it in, and open iPlayer. If it asks you to sign in, do so with your BBC account. Signing out and in again fixes many playback and "can't verify" issues.
2. Clear the cache, then the data
- Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
- Select BBC iPlayer.
- Choose Clear cache and try the app.
- If it still misbehaves, choose Clear data. This signs you out, so you will need to log in again.
The menu wording varies by Fire OS version.
3. Update the app and the stick
Open the Appstore, find iPlayer and update it if an update is offered. Also check Settings > My Fire TV > About for a system update. If iPlayer crashes on opening, uninstalling and reinstalling the app is the next step. A crowded storage area causes crashes too: see how to fix a slow Firestick.
4. Turn off VPNs and DNS filters
iPlayer checks that you are in the UK. A VPN, or a DNS service that filters or redirects traffic, can interfere with that check or with video delivery. Switch off any VPN app on the stick and any custom DNS or filtering on the stick or router while you test. If it then works, put things back one at a time. Our router settings guide covers DNS on the router.
5. Check the network
- Test another app. If none work, restart the router.
- Try Ethernet or move the stick closer to the router.
- Run a speed test on the stick's network at your usual viewing time.
What do the error messages mean?
iPlayer error messages vary and the wording changes, so we won't try to list numbers. Read the message: a "can't play" or connection message usually points to your network, a sign-in message to your account, and a location message to the UK check. Note the exact wording and any code, then search the BBC's own help pages, which are the authority on what each code means.
If that didn't work
Before asking for help, gather your Fire TV model, the Fire OS version, the iPlayer version and the exact error text. Note whether other apps like ITVX and Channel 4 work. For other free legal options, see free legal live TV in the UK.
Tell us the error text you saw and which step fixed it.
