The Nvidia Shield TV is old by streaming-box standards, but it is still one of the most capable Android TV devices you can buy, and a handful of settings decide whether you get the best out of it. These Nvidia Shield tips cover picture, sound, storage, Plex and the remote.

Menu names below follow Nvidia's own support pages and recent Shield software. They can differ slightly between software versions, so if something is not where it should be, look in the neighbouring menu.

Quick answer: Switch AI upscaling to "AI-Enhanced" under Settings > AI upscaling, use Match frame rate (beta) from the playback settings menu, set audio formats under Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings, and adopt a USB drive as device storage if you need more app space.

Is the Nvidia Shield still supported in 2026?

The Shield is still receiving updates. The latest release I could find was Shield Experience Upgrade 9.2.4 (build 33.2.0.400), posted on Nvidia's forum in February 2026. It updated security patches to January 2026 and fixed issues including Disney+ playback, HDMI-CEC problems, remote behaviour in sleep mode and Bluetooth disconnects. The Shield remains on Android 11, which arrived in January 2022 with version 9.0. I found no sign of a newer Android version.

Nvidia has said it has no plans to stop updating Shield TV devices any time soon, but it has not confirmed new hardware. A newer update may exist than the ones I found, so check the About or system upgrade option in your Shield's Settings menu. I have not verified the exact path for the latest software.

One forum user reported stuttering with HBO Max after upgrading to 9.2.4. That is a single user report, not a confirmed bug, but it is worth knowing before you update a box you rely on.

What is the difference between the Shield TV and Shield TV Pro?

Both 2019 models use the Tegra X1+ chip. The Pro has 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage and two USB 3.0 ports, whereas the standard Shield has 2 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage and a microSD slot. Nvidia's AI upscaling is listed on both.

If you plan to run a media server or add large drives, the Pro is the better buy. For a plain streaming box the standard model is fine. For a wider comparison with other boxes see Google TV devices compared.

How do I use AI upscaling on the Shield?

AI upscaling sharpens lower-resolution video when it is shown on a 4K TV. Nvidia says "Enhanced" is on by default, and you can choose "AI-Enhanced" under Settings > AI upscaling. Detail enhancement is available only in AI-Enhanced mode.

It does not apply to everything. Nvidia's page says it falls back to Enhanced for video below 480p, for frame rates above 30 Hz and for the RGB colour space. Compare it on content you know well, because it is a matter of taste and some people find it too sharp.

How do I match frame rate on the Shield?

Films are normally made at 24 frames per second, but a TV running at 60 Hz has to stretch them, which causes judder. Matching the display's refresh rate to the video fixes that. Our HDR, Dolby Vision and frame rate guide explains the idea in more depth.

On the Shield, Nvidia's support page describes Match frame rate (beta) as a player-time option. Start a video, press the Settings button on the remote and choose Match frame rate (beta) from the quick settings menu. The display goes back to its normal refresh rate when playback stops, so you need to switch it on each time. Nvidia also says you can assign it to the remote's Settings button under Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Customize Settings button.

Some third-party guides list a persistent "Match content frame rate" switch in Display & Sound. I could not confirm that on Nvidia's pages, so check whether your software version has it.

What are the best audio passthrough settings?

Passthrough means the Shield sends the original surround sound to your TV or receiver unchanged so that it can do the decoding. Nvidia's guidance covers how to do this.

  1. Go to Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings.
  2. Under Available formats, Auto lets the Shield read what your receiver or TV supports over HDMI.
  3. If you get no sound or problems, switch to Manual and select only the formats your equipment can decode.
  4. For a soundbar or older receiver behind the TV, Nvidia advises Manual with all Dolby formats off except Dolby Digital (AC3).

Nvidia lists support for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and DTS Core, but your receiver or TV must be able to decode them or you may get no audio. For Atmos through a TV you generally need eARC. Apps such as Plex, Kodi and VLC have their own passthrough options, which must be enabled as well. See audio passthrough and Atmos for the full picture.

Forum users disagree about whether to enable Dolby Audio Processing and "Match content audio resolution", and I could not settle it from official pages. Try one change at a time.

How do I add storage to a Shield?

By default, a connected USB drive is treated as removable storage, and apps cannot be installed on it. To use it for apps, format it as device storage. The current path is Settings > Device Preferences > Storage, then choose the drive and Set up as device storage. This formats and encrypts the drive, so back up anything on it first.

The drive then belongs to that Shield and cannot be used on other devices unless you reformat it. A USB 3.0 drive gives better speed. Keep media files you share between devices on a separate drive set up as removable storage.

Can the Shield TV Pro run a Plex server?

Yes. The Shield TV Pro supports Plex Media Server, and Android Central reports that it comes pre-installed. Because the internal storage is small, you will want an external drive for your library. Sources recommend against running a server on the standard Shield. If you are weighing Plex against Jellyfin or an antenna set-up, see Plex, Jellyfin and live TV from an antenna.

Can I change what the Shield remote buttons do?

Natively, only the Settings button can be customised, under Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Customize Settings button. Digital Trends says you can assign actions such as opening a favourite app, taking a screenshot or muting the volume. To remap other buttons, people use a third-party app called Button Mapper, which has to be enabled as an accessibility service. Install apps like that only from the official store.

Questions about your own Shield are welcome in the Android TV boxes forum.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Nvidia Shield still get updates?

Yes. The most recent update I found was 9.2.4 in February 2026, and Nvidia has said it has no plans to stop updating the Shield any time soon.

What Android version does the Shield run?

Android 11. I found no evidence of an Android 12 or newer release for it.

Is AI upscaling worth turning on?

It is a matter of taste. It works on lower-resolution content shown on a 4K TV, but it is skipped for some content such as video below 480p, frame rates above 30 Hz and RGB colour. Try it with both settings and keep what looks better.

Can I run Plex Media Server on the standard Shield?

It is not recommended. The Pro is the model suited to running a server, mainly because of its storage and USB ports.

Why is there no sound in Dolby Atmos?

Your TV, soundbar or receiver may not support the format, the connection may not carry it (a TV usually needs eARC), or the app may not have passthrough enabled. Set the Available formats option to Manual and select only supported formats.
