You can update a MAG box's firmware from its own settings menu or from a USB stick, and the only firmware worth using is the official image for your exact model from Infomir. If the box works properly and your operator has not asked you to update, leaving it alone is often the safest choice.
Quick answer: Use the box's built-in software update option first. Use a USB update only with the official image for your exact model from Infomir, and never unplug the box while it is writing. If it is working fine, you don't have to update.
Should I update my MAG box at all?
Update when there is a reason: a fix for a fault you actually have, a security issue, or your operator or Infomir's documentation tells you to. Don't update just because a newer number exists. Some operators control which firmware their boxes run, and a version they haven't tested can change how a portal behaves. If you got the box through an operator, ask them first. Our MAG box explained guide covers who controls what.
Method 1: update from the settings menu
Menu names vary by model and firmware version, so treat this as a map rather than exact wording.
- Connect the box by Ethernet if you can. A dropped Wi-Fi link in the middle of a download is the last thing you want.
- Open the box's Settings (or System settings) menu and look for an entry such as Software update or Upgrade.
- Choose the update source it offers. If the box lets you check for a new version, run the check.
- If a newer version is found, start the update and leave the box alone. It will restart by itself, sometimes more than once.
If the box says it is already up to date, or the option isn't there, that is useful information. Don't go hunting for files elsewhere.
Method 2: update from a USB stick
This is for when the menu method isn't available or Infomir's documentation for your model says to use it.
- Go to Infomir's own website and find the support or firmware pages for your exact model. A MAG524 image is not interchangeable with a MAG540 one.
- Download the image and read the instructions that come with it. The file names and folder layout matter, and they differ between models.
- Prepare a USB stick as the instructions say. Most guides call for a stick formatted as FAT32, but follow Infomir's wording for your model.
- Put the stick in the box and start the update from the box's menu or its bootloader menu, as the instructions describe.
- Wait for the box to finish and restart. Remove the stick only afterwards.
Where not to get firmware
Don't install firmware from forums, file-sharing sites, video descriptions or sellers who offer "improved", "unlocked" or "pre-loaded" images. A box that runs unofficial firmware may stop receiving proper updates, may not behave as your operator expects, and you can't know what else is in the image. It is the same risk as a modified APK on an Android box.
What happens if the update is interrupted?
A power cut or unplugged cable during the writing stage is the main risk. The box may fail to start normally and show the bootloader menu or a blank screen. Not every interrupted update is fatal, but you should plan to avoid it:
- Plug the box straight into a wall socket, not a loose extension lead.
- Don't press buttons or pull the USB stick mid-update.
- Don't start an update during a storm or if the power has been flaky.
If that didn't work
If the box won't finish updating or won't boot afterwards, note the exact model, the firmware version it showed before, what the screen says and what you did. Then see our MAG box guide for the basics, try a different USB stick and the other update method, and ask Infomir's support or your operator before trying anything else. A reset can sometimes recover a box, but it clears settings, so write down what you will need to re-enter first.
