MAG 544w3 vs MAG 524w3: what actually changed?

0 replies1 viewsStarted 5 hr ago

The short version: the MAG 544w3 is a current Infomir model, while the MAG 524w3 is an older name that no longer appears on Infomir's current range page. We could only confirm the 544w3's specs from Infomir, so this page tells you what is verified and how to check the rest before paying for an upgrade.

Quick answer: If your service supports the 544w3 and you want AV1 and a current model, it is the safer buy. We could not confirm from Infomir the 524w3's chipset or AV1 support, so check its own datasheet before assuming an upgrade is worthwhile.

What Infomir lists today

Infomir's "Choose your MAG" page, when we checked, lists four models: MAG540w3, MAG544w3, MAG540w3 RDK and MAG555. For the MAG544w3 it shows an Amlogic S905Y4-B chipset, Linux, 4K output, and HEVC (listed as optional) and AV1. The MAG524w3 was not among the current models, and we could not confirm whether it has been discontinued. It still turns up second-hand and in retailer listings.

The comparison

MAG 544w3 MAG 524w3
On Infomir's current range page Yes Not listed
Chipset Amlogic S905Y4-B Check Infomir's datasheet
AV1 Listed Check the datasheet
HDMI version Check the spec table Check the datasheet
RAM type and Wi-Fi Check the spec table Check the datasheet

We are not filling the blanks from memory, because the figures differ between retailer listings and Infomir's own tables were not fully consistent.

How to compare them properly

  1. Open the model's page on infomir.eu and read the specification table.
  2. Compare the video decoders, HDMI version, RAM, storage and Wi-Fi standard side by side.
  3. Check which codecs your service actually sends. AV1 only matters if your service uses it. HEVC support is listed as optional on the 544w3, so check that the unit you are buying includes it.
  4. Check firmware. An older box may no longer receive updates.

Is upgrading worth it?

Consider upgrading if your box struggles with 4K or HEVC streams, you want AV1, or the old one is out of support. If your 524w3 works well with your service at the resolution you use, there is little reason to change. Buying second-hand carries risks: unknown history, old firmware, and a box that may already be tied to another account (see MAG box explained).

If you are still stuck

Gather the exact model and firmware version, the video format that fails and your TV's resolution. Do not post MAC addresses, portal addresses or serial numbers.
